Xenoflight by Nean McKenzie
Cryptozoology
Firstly, this is such an awesome topic for a book the whole family will enjoy. Cryptozoology is a pseudoscience that searches for and studies unknown, legendary, or extinct animals, particularly those in popular folklore, like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Yowies, Bunyips and Drop Bears. Cryptozoologists refer to these entities as Cryptids.
And, what an adventure!!!
Xenoflight
Our main protagonist, Nessa has what’s called Xenoflight. She has visions when she closes her eyes of past family encounters with cryptids and her own connection to them. With the help of Kep, a boy from her school, she embarks on a wild and wonderous adventure through rural Australia to save these amazing animals from Cryptid Hunters and an organisation known as HARNESS.
As well as saving the Cryptids, Nessa is searching for her mysterious father, who she’s never met. All the while she is being chased by a Cryptid Hunter, who could be after her Cryptid pet ferret Fernando.
Warning: Drop Bears sighted in Tasmania
When a news report announces a Drop Bear has been captured by a Cryptid Hunter, the big boss of HARNESS reports he’s coming to Australia to capture more creatures.
Nessa and Kep must stop HARNESS from harming the cryptids, find her father, and solve the mystery of her family’s connection to these beasts.
We don’t see any Drop Bears, but we do meet a super cool Yowie. This is such an enjoyable adventure story from start to finish. Beautifully written and keeping you guessing all the way to the end.
